Saitō, Sanosuke and Aoshi fight Shishio, but they are easily defeated. Before Aoshi is finished, Kenshin wakes up and continues fighting Shishio. This time Kenshin overpowers Shishio, who starts becoming unable to fight due to the burns on his body caused by the Meiji Government years ago. Yumi tries to save Shishio, but Shishio uses her to injure Kenshin, although Yumi dies in the process. Shishio attempts to engage Kenshin again, but his body is soon incinerated by his burns. Shocked by Shishio’s death, Hōji destroys the base, but all the people there able to survive the explosion. One month later, Kenshin is recovering from his wounds along with his friends, and they are visited by Chō. He explains them that most Juppongatana have joined to the Meiji Government, while Anji requested to be in prison, and Hōji committed suicide. However, Sōjirō and Iwanbō were never found.
